California became the first state in the nation to ban the sale of puppies, dogs, cats, kittens and rabbits in pet stores when AB 485 went into effect on January 1. However, if pets come from shelters or rescue groups they may be offered for sale in pet stores.

The Pet Rescue and Adoption Act also stipulates that pet stores “maintain records sufficient to document the source of each dog, cat or rabbit the pet store sells or provides space for, for at least one year, and to post, in a conspicuous location on the cage or enclosure of each animal, a sign listing the name of the entity from which each dog, cat or rabbit was obtained.”
