That\u2019s the same conditioned response a dog develops when we offer a treat if he doesn\u2019t eat his food.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe owner is training that pet not to eat that food anymore because the pet is going to know that if I just wait, I\u2019m going to get something of higher value,\u201d Dr. Cline says.<\/p>\n<p>Often the higher-value food is a table scrap. And that can be a vicious circle. \u201cIf you give a lot of table foods, it might fill them up, and then they\u2019re not hungry to eat their regular diet,\u201d Dr. Cline warns.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Think in dog scale.<\/strong> \u201cMost dogs don\u2019t need to eat anywhere near the amount of calories that we eat,\u201d Dr. Cline says.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Linder agrees. \u201cThat piece of chicken may be 20 calories, which is nothing to us, but that could be 10% of a Chihuahua\u2019s daily needs,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-386751\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dogster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/1912_Hydrated_getty1007723474-600x400.png\" alt=\"improve your dog's diet\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Always Provide Clean, Fresh Water<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Keep an eye on how much your dog drinks (too much or too little can signal a medical issue). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dogster.com\/dog-health-care\/water-for-dogs-what-type-of-water-should-your-dog-drink\">To encourage water intake<\/a>, freeze your dog\u2019s favorite toy or treat in water and let him lick the frozen cube.
