Being in a cage, although a very large one for George and Willow the Green Cheek Cinnamon Conures, is a nice enough home but it doesn\u2019t adequately provide them with the exercise they need. Definitely nothing like if they were in the wild. As a pet owner, I am most aware of this issue, so the family engages in providing as much exercise for the birds as is possible within our schedule and also ensuring our other pets are also taken care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We understand that flying would be the best exercise for them, but unfortunately this cannot be the case around the neighbourhood, with domestic cats in the area, and as we live across the road from large parkland with natural fauna, has its own trepidation.  So we ensure that they are protected as much as possible from possums and other larger birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fear, is if the Conures are released, they could be attacked by neighbouring pets as mentioned earlier. We had an episode recently were we lost a baby conure who flew onto a neighbours roof, and was afraid to return. This was very sad, as we didn\u2019t have the means to return the bird, after attempts to retrieve her with ladders and the like. Unfortunately we were not able to achieve the retrieval and we lost her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are alternatives to flying which we have introduced for George and Willow, this has been through the purchase of accessories for them to climb and enclosures to sleep in. We try and rotate the accessories in their cage at least once a month, and we can\u2019t help but buy them new accessories when we see something they might like. So as I am alluding to, climbing is a good exercise for the conures. So much that my daughter let them climb her ceiling light grid in her room. We find that climbing is one of the best ways they can get some exercise. One item we placed in their cage is a ladder, which provides them with some exercise, and it is used throughout the day, so it and they get a good workout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another way, is for George and Willow to move their wings, we achieve this by allowing our conures to perch on my daughters hand, where she will take a wing, and move the wing up, down and around in a circle, while holding their feet. Of course this is done with one Conure at a time, otherwise it just becomes difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both George and Willow like playing games, we have provided them with small, manageable balls which they can grip with their talons. They will either walk around the cage or on the floor while playing with the balls. They seem to enjoy it very much, they have also been known to hide in blankets, in jumpers, very similar to a game of peek-a-boo. Regardless, there are many different games the conures like to play and we oblige as much as possible, and we try to be as creative as we can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conures are taken out of their cage as much as possible and have free range of the house, walking to the TV room. At times the conures are lazy and would prefer to perch themselves on our shoulders and walk around the house with us. They are very curious, and like to be involved in the daily home chores or be with us when we talk to friends, but if they take exception to you, they will fly off your shoulder and attack your ear lobe or eyebrow, so we have to be very careful. We also have a smaller cage for travel, at times we have been known to take the birds with us on a drive. Very similar to taking a dog for a drive, window down and head out the window, the birds seem to enjoy the wind through their wings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opportunity and ability of exercise every day is important, also important is to ensure the birds are in good health, before commencing any exercise.  We have taken the conures to the vet and made sure they are in good, sound strength before they started roaming the house and commenced their exercise regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We want to make sure that George and Willow have an outlet to exercise otherwise they can get aggressive and be difficult to manage, especially when other people are in the house. We understand that being enclosed is not the best scenario for the birds, so we exercise them and make them part of the family group so they get to move around as much as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We started slowly, which now is a daily routine, I would like to know your methods of exercising your pet, it would be great to hear from you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following is a summary of how we exercise or Green Cheek Cinnamon Conures<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wing Rotation<\/td>Rotation of the conures pectoral muscles<\/td><\/tr>
General Play<\/td>It involves the movement of the entire body<\/td><\/tr>
Climbing<\/td>This works the legs and other parts of their body.<\/td><\/tr>
Going for a Walk<\/td>Take the birds with you when going on a walk, drive.
