Commonly, when companion pets are discussed, we think of Dogs, Cats maybe a rabbit, but there is one species which seldom get a mention, and they are birds, in particular parrots. Our feathery friends are beautiful, colorful, smart and social. Depending on which parrot is selected, they can talk as well. So, it shouldn\u2019t be a great surprise that birds make wonderful companions, as they take up little space, depending on which parrot becomes a companion and they are growing in popularity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, many companion birds wind up homeless when their owners no longer want them or are unable to care for them properly. Companion birds can make wonderful pets for those who take the time to learn what bird care entails. No matter the species, birds need a well-constructed cage that\u2019s large enough for them to stretch their wings and fly short distances. Time spent outside of the cage in a safe, enclosed room is essential for most birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

While smaller species like Green Cheek Cinnamon Conures or even canaries should have proper environmental stimulation in their cages. Diet should consist of high-quality, organic pellets, and fresh fruit and vegetables. Though tame, some birds like parrots still display wild behaviors, such as screaming and pulling out feathers that can catch unsuspecting bird owners by surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adopting a bird is a long-term commitment. Most birds live eight years or longer, and a parrot\u2019s life span, such as the Green Check Cinnamon Conure can be over 35 years, and a Macaw over 80. An annual visit to a veterinarian is essential, especially since birds are notorious for masking their symptoms when they are sick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proper housing is essential in caring for birds.\u00a0 As all new birds should be kept separate from birds already living in the household until they have been quarantined for an appropriate length of time. This includes a separate air supply and separate equipment and utensils. Consult with your veterinarian about the recommended quarantine period, which should include a veterinary exam prior to its completion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

There should be sufficient, appropriate food and water for the bird, in advance of bringing it home. Initially, feed the bird the same food it has been eating. Any food changes should be made gradually. Speak with an expert about ways to safely convert a bird to a healthy balanced diet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bird cage should provide area for sufficient exercise with enough space for it to climb, walk around, and ideally, fly. Because most cages restrict a bird\u2019s ability to fly, providing supervised access to an adequately sized exercise area, outside of the cage, for several hours each day if possible is ideal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cage should be designed for easy removal of dishes and droppings and be free from hazards such as cleaning fumes or cooking odours, which can sicken a bird. The cage should be placed away from drafts and at eye level or higher so the bird will feel more secure. Perches should allow maximum horizontal flight, be sized appropriately for the bird\u2019s feet, and provide good footing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
