Maybe you\u2019re not like me. Maybe you don\u2019t wonder whether your pups are plotting their next prank and whether it will embarrass you. If you don’t, your dogs probably aren\u2019t \u201cnaughty\u201d like mine are, and you\u2019ve probably never had your dog run around your cocktail party with your bra in his mouth. You might ask, \u201cCan a dog even BE naughty?\u201d It does seem like a rather human trait, but the answer is certainly \u201cYes!\u201d even if it’s only how we perceive their less-than-angelic but humorous behavior.<\/p>\n
\u201cNaughty\u201d in human terms is really a discreet word for \u201cmorally questionable\u201d or, if you want to get academic, \u201cimproper\u201d or \u201cindecent.\u201d Dogs aren\u2019t scholarly. They don\u2019t know the difference between an adults-only video store and a kiddie amusement park. So this definition fits dogs only when humans feel prudish and get embarrassed by their dog\u2019s mischievous and \u201cindecent\u201d behavior (such as the improper placement of noses in improper places and even the occasional digestion of, well, poopie.)<\/p>\n
For our purposes, we’ll define \u201cnaughty\u201d as \u201crascally, impish, playful, humorous and wily.\u201d<\/p>\n

1. Charisma. <\/strong>No, really. Charisma is persuading everyone that you\u2019re doing what they want you to, even though you\u2019re not. I\u2019d say all dogs have some charisma but some have more than others or, maybe, some know how to work it better than others (and thus get away with more.)<\/p>\n 2. Desire to Please.<\/strong> Naughty dogs are performing for us. They want us to approve of their misbehaving.<\/p>\n 3. Willingness to Disobey.<\/strong> As in, \u201cI know you just said to get my head out of the trash, but I\u2019m going to grab that chicken bone in there and then run around the apartment taunting you with it\u201d sort of behavior.<\/p>\n 4. Sense of (Canine) Humor.<\/strong> Yes, dogs laugh with their tails. And, yes, dogs somehow understand that, when we laugh, it\u2019s a good thing. They like to make us laugh. They just do.<\/p>\n 5. A Sense of (Human) Humor.<\/strong> Whether a dog is funny and, therefore, naughty instead of annoying or frustrating depends on our perception of their behavior. If you laugh and engage with your dog when he steals the toilet plunger for the upteenth time, he\u2019ll keep on stealing it and you\u2019ll keep on having pictures of your dog and a toilet plunger to post on Facebook. A dog that breaks away and tries to get you to chase him across a busy street is not amusing, nor is he \u201cnaughty.\u201d Any behavior that compromises safety must be stopped,<\/p>\n You\u2019ll see several bully dog breeds below.
