Maybe you\u2019re outside. Fido is fine one minute, and the next, he\u2019s hobbling around. When this occurs, it can sometimes be difficult to diagnose the cause of a dog limping.<\/p>\n \u201cThere could be quite a few reasons why a dog is limping,\u201d says Dr. Michelle Burch, DVM, from\u00a0Safe Hounds Pet Insurance<\/a>.<\/p>\n Burch went over many of the reasons why your dog may be limping and what to do about it.<\/p>\n When you see your dog limping, it\u2019s natural to want to get to the root of the problem and figure out why. Not all of the reasons are cause for much concern, at least at first, while others may be more serious. These are some common ones Burch has seen:<\/p>\n Not all instances of dog limping will lead to a vet visit. Burch says the first step is to see if you can identify the cause.<\/p>\n \u201cCheck the leg and in between the paws,\u201d Burch says. \u201cLook for any signs of tree sap.\u201d<\/p>\n If you see thorns or sap, try to remove them. Burch also suggests looking for any signs of swelling, cuts and bruises. If you find that, call the vet.<\/p>\n \u201cIf you don\u2019t find anything abnormal, you can try resting it for a day or two,\u201d Burch says. \u201cBe a couch potato.\u201d<\/p>\n What does\u00a0strict rest\u00a0mean? \u201cNo running, jumping or roughhousing and only going outside on a leash to potty,\u201d Burch says.<\/p>\n The leash part is important, Burch stresses. \u201cI have seen dogs on activity restriction who go outside off-leash, see a squirrel, and cause more trauma,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n Burch also recommends icing the leg the dog is limping on two or three times per day for five to 10 minutes to reduce swelling and pain.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t recommend giving any over-the-counter human pain medication without speaking to a vet,\u201d Burch says, adding that some medications are toxic to dogs and others require precise dosing.<\/p>\n If the dog isn\u2019t better in 24 to 48 hours, call the vet to schedule an exam.<\/p>\n \u201cIf it\u2019s not clearing up on its own, you need to find out why.\u201d<\/p>\n The post Dog Limping: What You Need to Know<\/a> by Beth Ann Mayer<\/a> appeared first on Dogster<\/a>.
